| | ecstatic | ] | So... I just found out I got in to the Rosalind Franklin Applied Physiology Master's Program!!!!
Which means I will be moving to CHicago in July.
I didn't get into med school this year(b/c of my low GPA). So I had to apply for masters programs so I could boost my GPA and prove that I'm worthy of medschool. SO through this program I will take classes with first year med students and must maintain a B average to get the M.S. in the end...
It'll be really REALLY tough, especially since I have to apply to med schools at the SAME time, so I'm a little nervous but...SO EXCITED!
I love Chicago...great food, great sights...and I have family there! And my old roommate from college got into Loyola so we can be roommates again!
It might be tough doing long distance again but also better for both of us b/c...less distractions...and not having to feel guilty about being so busy and not spending time w the significant other.
Yay! |

| | blah | ] | So I was watching a movie and one of the characters stated that... in a relationship, men do what makes them happy but women make themselves happy by making their partners happy. Ie. making their partner happy is enough to make them happy. This really makes a lot of sense to me and I wonder if this is an inherent difference between men and women. Or is it just me? Thoughts anyone? |

| back to the old routine... |
[Jan. 6th, 2005|06:44 pm] |
So I just came back from a 2 1/2 week vacation spent between Alex's place in California and family's in Houston, TX. I'm exhausted. I met nearly all of Alex's parents' family friends b/c they all wanted to meet me and maybe about half of Alex's friends. Every night there was someone else to meet up with. Even though its pretty fun meeting everyone its still nice to get some down time.
I think visiting my cousin in Texas was the most relaxed. I got to go to a fobby karaoke bar, eat, read, sleep, and go on one of his rotations with him(he's doing his surgical residency at Baylor). I got a lot of reading done...Bridget Jones' Diary(ugh.... probably the most annoying book to read ever) Speaker for the Dead(pretty good but not nearly as action packed as the others in the series) The Notebook(really short and not too terribly mushy) and Da Vinci Code(couldn't put it down...really fast read and interesting...I recommend it)
New Year's resolution: return more phone calls and try to answer phone calls more often. I'm really bad about this. No offense to anyone whose phone calls I have not returned. I'm not really a phone person I guess. The fastest way to get in touch with me is probably email.
I'm also gonna try a little harder to keep in touch with friends. So I've decided to do a phone call drawing every week. AT the end of the week I'll draw a name out of a hat and whoever's name I pull out will get a phone call form me!!!
Which reminds me...I have a lot of phone calls to make. hmm...maybe later. oh well....
Anyways, hope everyone had a great holiday and Happy New Year's!!! |

| Let it SNOW! |
[Oct. 31st, 2004|11:17 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | bouncy | ] | it has just started snowing in Boulder...very exciting. THe first day of snow is on Halloween! Alex and I celebrated by having a 5 minute snowball fight. I love snow, reminds me of Xmas as a kid. Its sad that as you grow older the simple pleasures that you found when you were younger no longer evoke the same emotions. I often wish that I could've stayed a kid... life would be so simple and pure. (Maybe thats why I like being with Alex so much???) But I think, or hope, that XMas time will always stay the same for me. I love the holidays...the Xmas music playing all around, everyone shopping for gifts, family reunions... I can't wait!
Halloween is usually my favorite holiday though. But this year it was not quite so fun since I don't have my friends here. (I miss you guys!!!) And, it was much too cold to do anything that involved being outdoors for more than 2 minutes. So just hung out with some friends and watched Alien, which was not all that scary. On Friday I saw The Grudge, American version with Buffy, and it was pretty good. But the problem with those jumpy scary movies is that you get desensitized after a while and the movie becomes really predictable. But it was scary enough to have me looking over my shoulder every 5 seconds and desperately jetting across rooms in order to reach the light switch, for a couple days. Alex refused to see the movie with me, which I think may have been for the best. One of us has to remain sane and unparanoid.
Just a reminder, Alex's Bday is in a few days...on the 10th...If anyone could make it to visit that would be awesome...or just a phone call. He's turning the big *2-5*...
Hope everyone had a safe and eventful Halloween! |

| | thirsty | ] | So for fall break Alex and I decided to go to Austin Texas last minute, and by last minute I mean we left at 4 AM on the day we decided to go on this lttle trip. Spontaneity is great but sometimes painful as we did not plan for the horribly long and dull drive. Maps.com said 16 hours so we figured we could make it in 12...but damn Kansas cop killed that plan. Apparently Kansas cops are huge pricks. We saw several other people getting ticketed along the way... but ONLY in Kansas.
So that made the trip unbearably long and we couldn't switch off since I haven't learned to drive stick yet.
But once we got to Austin it was awesome. My favorite part of the trip was the steak...mmmmmm...juicy, tender, Texas steak....::drool::
I also finished watching Escaflowne and it was good up until the end. Its like a total tease. They build up this big romance at the end of the series and then completely leave you hanging. They don't even make out! its like having your high school crush tell you they like you and then decide to never talk to you again. Why did they even throw in the romance? but SOME ppl like it...masochists!....Other than that I enjoyed it.
going to the theatre to see Shawn of the Dead was awesome too...They should have more theatres where you can watch a movie get beer...altho...a full bar would have been cooler.
Then on Sunday we headed back to colorado. It was the longest drive ever. Alex got so tired he started to see things. So I had to constantly think of ways to keep him up. I resorted to random smackings and screaming, scaring the shit out of him. But we got back safely at 4:30 AM and went straight to bed. Alex got to sleep in while I had to go to work 4 hours later.
Speaking of work...since I got hired onto another research project I now have TWO bosses. This sucks balls...huge sweaty hairy balls. My previous boss was SO awesome and totally laid back but my new boss is really huffy and moody. He makes me really tense since he'll always assume that you know what to do without explaining anything and gets all pissy when you misinterpret what he says. My other nice boss warned me about that...his tendency to leave out details...but I didn't think it would be so bad.
But on the bright side, I'm working with some cool ppl. I used to work alone so I never had anyone to talk to or any way of meeting ppl. But now there's other ppl around who talk about things other than mortgage payments and kids. Three of them are also applying for med school.
Classes suck...anatomy is draining the life out of me, biochem's not bad. Yoga is pretty fun...its getting hard tho...we're doing headstands, handstands and stuff...and its only beginning yoga. There's two guys in the back of the class who I think are just there to stare at or pick up chicks. |

| funny...yet so true.... |

| | amused | ] | A French teacher was explaining to her class that in French, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. ''House'' for instance, is feminine: ''la maison.'' ''Pencil,'' however, is masculine: ''le crayon.''
A student asked, ''What gender is 'computer'?''
Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether ''computer'' should be a masculine or a feminine noun.
Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men's group decided that ''computer'' should definitely be of the feminine gender (''la computer''), because: 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic; 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else; 3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.
(No chuckling guys . . . this gets better!)
The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine (''le computer''), because: 1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on; 2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves; 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and 4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.
The women won. |

| New Willy WOnka... |
[Sep. 23rd, 2004|11:37 pm] |

| | confused | ] | So they're making a new 2005 version of Willy Wonka and the Choclate FActory...called Charlie and the Chocolate FActory...and guess who's playing Willy Wonka.... guess... you'll never guess... The sexiest man alive, Johnny Depp... I'm totally confused, and conflicted about whether or not I want to see this movie. On the one hand, Johnny Depp is the hottest man alive. But on the other hand, he's Willy Wonka, previously ingrained into my mind since third grade as the weird guy who lures children to his home with candy and slowly disposes of them in unusual ways....played by Gene Wilder... most unsexy.
The film is directed by Tim Burton and while I've enjoyed his previous work, except Planet of the Apes, his films are a little...off... ::sigh:: what to do..... |

| post race... |
[Sep. 20th, 2004|04:25 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | chipper | ] | SO yes, I completed my first race...with a pathetic time of 1:13:57...ewww... But in my defense this was a pretty tough race...it was at an altitude of about 8000 feet and had a net 900 ft upward climb. Not the best race to do without any training but I didn't do too HORRIBLE. The final results were that I was 46 in my age group and 280 overall out of 340 runners. eh, at least I wasnt the last one. But, I think I could have pushed myself harder b/c I don't even feel sore. I think the dehydration kept me from running faster b/c the entire time I had a pounding headache...which I imagined is what other ppl experience when they have a hangover. Oddly enough, I've never had a hangover. Even though I'm severely dehydrated all the time, drinking only like 1 glass of water a day. hmmm...interesting... good genes I guess?
Anyways, I got a free hydration pack out of it and a free breakfast(which was pretty bad). All in all it was a lot of fun. I can see why Alex likes running so much, because of his track and marathon days. Its a lot more fun when there;s an immediate goal. I highly suggest that you guys who are trying to get fit sign up for one. Its a big motivator and leaves you with a sense of accomplishment that's associated with running.
I hate med school applications...umm thats all for now. |

| | tired | ] | I finally have my own snowboard set!!! yay!! I can;t wait to hit the slopes!!!
Good news, Adeline and Jackie are gonna visit me!! whoo hoo!!! during thanksgiving break. If anyone else wants ta come visit, come on down! The more the merrier. I think we're all gonna get a trip to Steamboat, where supposedly they have the best snow. All you UIUC ppl should come then too. Alex has been here for a year now and no one's come to visit him! BAD friends! BAD! And right now the plane tickets to Denver are not bad so you guys have no excuse! Especially YOU Daniel!
I've registered for a my first race. I thought I would start out with an easy one since I've never ran one before and I'm not in the best shape. So I signed up for the Sombrero Ranch Round Up Epic Trail run which is only 4.4 miles, which would be totally doable. BUT, I didn't realize that it would consist of "elevation ranges between 7,500' and 8,000' with about 900' of hard fought gain from start to finish". GREAT......And the race starts at 9 AM, ugh...yuck! But good news is that at the end you get an all you can eat breakfast and a 50 oz. High Sierra Gulp hydration backpack. YAY! But I dunno if I'll survive until the end. Wish me luck!
Since I have no cable I've taken up reading. I think it helps me to read through textbooks faster too. Although once I pick up a book, its really hard for me to put it down. Just like when I watch TV series and anime. Once I've started, I'm finishing the damn thing.
I've almost finished reading Ender's Shadow...which is just as good ,if not better, than Ender's GAme. I like it a lot because the main character is somewhat of an underdog and the plot has more twists. Its a great compliment to Ender's Game and I feel it evokes a lot more emotion. I think in Ender's Game you don't feel as much for the character b/c he's made out to be this godlike phenom who remains consistent throughout the book. But in Ender's Shadow the character experiences a lot of hardship and seems more human because the author reveals his flaws and also his personal growth. I've heard that the other books in the series are not comparable but I think I'll read them all anyways. I might even go back and read all those high school assigned reading, like Grapes of Wrath, CAtcher in the Rye, etc...Maybe they won't be as boring the 2nd time around.
Classes suck, especially Biochem.
Thats all for now kids. |

| | blank | ] | Ok so writing about the entire wedding weekend would take too long and I'm too lazy so I'm just gonna post highlights...Plus I'm sure Daniel's pretty much covers it...
Meeting the 5N guys including the questionable RA...who I'm still baffled by since I usu have pretty good gaydar...??? standing in for Kim at the wedding Bubble/spit war w/ Seth and Dink DIm sum with Min Scary stories with Rob,Seth, and Dink...
Thats all I can think of now...If i left anything out that anyone feels is noteworthy, post me one.
I've posted pictures on my ofoto site. Just go to Ofoto.com user:lummaya@yahoo.com pw:pimptastic
I now have a job working as a professional research assistant in the genetics lab working 35 hrs a wk, which entitles me to health care coverage! yay!!!
I've decided I really need to find a way to meet girls. I have entirely too much testosterone in my life and if it keeps going on, I might start growing testicles. So...I've decided to join a few classes at the student rec center...but I haven;t decided on which ones yet... women's self defense, yoga, pilates, latin dance, bellydancing, massage techniques, and Taijichuan.
Any suggestions?
I also finished reading Ender's Game a couple weeks ago and loved it. I think it might be my favorite sci fi book so far...well, besides LOTR...But now I'm starting Ender's Shadow which I hear is also really good. Any other recommendations? Has anyone read the Da Vinci Code? looks interesting...is it worth reading?
Anyways, I really really miss my friends from Fla, esp the girls!!! Its hard to meet ppl when ur not in a graduate program, have all huge auditorium classes, and work in a lab entirely by yourself. I hope all of you are doing great and I could really use a visit from you guys!!! |
